In my first week or two back on the bike, I've hit the airport climb on maybe three occasions -- it's steep, sustained, and really close to the office. I can climb it all the way to the top twice and still be back at my desk within an hour, so there's a lot of bang for the buck.
Here's a challenge -- post your best times there this summer as a reply to this thread, measured from Wake Robin Road to the gate entering the airport property.
I'll start -- here's my best time so far:
VERY':SLOW"
Beat that! (I didn't have a watch today).
Previous times don't matter -- unless they were from Wake Robin to the chainlink gate.

cool, this will be fun.
PS- it's the road that has a sign that says Wake Robin, or the one that you can find on Google maps faster than logging into the board and typing this line. Gosh, I can be so insensitive sometimes, sorry.

It will be fun. Hopefully the deadline is the entire 2008. Fortunately Gibbs does not read the message board very often, so hopefully he won't be playing this game at any point during the year. Should there be age and/or weight categories? Maybe not. It may over-complicate things. I assume there is not limit to the number of entries? I'll get an official distance on it and maybe we should require a photo of the cyclometer? OK, now that is just being mistrusting of me. Enough from me on this. Shut up and ride.

Some quick clarifications:
Wake Robin is the road intersecting from the left, about 300m from the first switchback and just before it gets steep. It's a good place to start because you can get into your cadence before it goes vertical. Start next to the inside of the intersection between Wake Robin and Little Savannah.
All times should be from a standing start (track stands are fine).
Yep -- all of 2008.
Multiple posts are absolutely OK -- show us how you improve throughout the year. You're racing yourself mainly, although bragging rights are certainly at stake.
Honor system is fine.
Have fun!

Is it okay if I report only the average of my two descents? They should roughly equal everyone elses' total times

Is it okay if I report only the average of my two descents? They should roughly equal everyone elses' total times I personally will not encourage anything like a downhill TT around two hairpin turns. I'm also pretty sure you would dust me like I was standing still, Will! I will however broaden the contest to be inclusive of different categories. We'll check the thread in December to pull times for: - Overall - Men - Women - Masters (40 and up as of 08) - MTB - Fixed Gear - Most improved time at non-variable HR (see reply number 17) Any time will be duplicated in all the categories it may meet (for example, if Deb does an attempt on an MTB, it'll go under "Women," "MTB," and "Overall."). It would be fun to handicap great climbers (you know who you are!) but that would be too complicated. Post your times on this thread as you see fit!

In this case, a standing start just means roll to a track stand or almost a full stop, start your watch, and GO! Maybe, at the end of the season, if we have some very close times, we'll offer the chance for folk to leave from a true standing start, with a holder and a timekeeper, to erase any possibility of a mistake. I wish I had my old frame ridable, it would be very interesting to see the time difference just between the old frame and new frame.
When I'm up there with the new bike, I'm taking a crack at it.

Recon Ride: Graph of File below Date: 3/21/08 Time: 9:50 Pace: Easy to Moderately Easy Distance: 1.09miles Heart Rate: - Min = 122
- Max = 137
- Average = 135
Power: - Min = 92watts
- Max = 362watts
- Average = 252watts
Speed: - Max = 10.9mph
- Average = 6.7mph
Cadence: Thoughts: The purpose of this ride was to figure out exactly how long, etc the route is and to figure out what kind of effort it will take to put in my personal best. I'd love to hear from the GPS users out there how much elevation gain, average slope, max slope, etc. there is as well. This will be a fairly short violent effort, much like a prologue of big stage races but all up hill. There are some steeper sections, so it will be interesting to figure out how to pace the route to reduce overall time. Traditionally you go harder on the steep sections and a little less hard on the not-so steep sections. Like all Time Trials, it will be tempting to go way too hard at the beginning and loose a lot of time at the end. If this were indeed a prologue of a a big race, I don't think we'd see much fancy aero gear. A skin suit and shoe covers, maybe a helmet, but I doubt we'd see disc wheels or TT bikes as the average speed will be very low and a light responsive bike would make the most sense. Racers would most likely ride their regular road bike with some modifications. With the UCI weight limit, I think we'd see some trick light wheels, the place where weight would make the most difference while climbing. I'll do it a few times over the next month to post some real times. A wild guess would for a good time for me would be 5-6 mins. Maybe less. From the power figures above, I can average over 400watts for 5 mins, so I'll start with that as my target wattage for pacing on the first effort and go from there. Unfortunately for me this thing is all uphill, and while I am fairly fit, I'm no stellar climber. It is short enough for me to do ok however. I would be curious to get a time from a Justin England or some other real climber. Around here, I think my money is on Gibbs for the overall. Thanks Vespa! If we did this up Cullowhee Mountain, the effort would hurt less but would hurt for longer and might draw some different results. Darby's existing record would probably hold up baring any really big names trying it.

Perhaps there should be Whee Mtn Climb challenge in addition to this Airport challenge this year. It may offer two different best time riders, as one is a short burst and the other a long steady climb requiring pace.

I have to get a time piece, now. Note to all -- let's keep the discussion and content in this thread about the Airport Challenge -- I started it as a year-long thread, so if we start any tangential discussions, we'll lose focus. If we start talking about where to go hard to get a good time on Cullowhee Mountain, or who's fast this week on the wall, or if there's water at the top of Waterrock -- well, you get the picture... Start a different thread if you like.

This is some of the wcu cycling teams results. Clints girlfriend Holly came and held us at the start.
Clint Hennessee = 6 min 26 sec Jay Mahan = 6 min 59 sec Adam Heth = 7 min 9 sec
We were all exited about the challenge and hope to see a lot of improvement over the year.
