I guess Cancellara must have been really mad, since he made a point of going against traffic, picking up the broken chain and ceremoniously hanging it around his neck , instead of just waiting for the team car. As if they were going to re-use that chain. I bet SRAM was glad with that exposure, of their most celebrated rider. Since they use the speed connector, failure can not be blaimed on the mechanic this time. Remember this was one out of the most important races of the year for him. When it comes to defects people don't look at the ones that don't break, but at the ones that do.

It's 3am. I just got home from the Charleston races. Jennifer was in a horrible crash, unconscious, ambulance ride, lots of expensive scans. She did not break anything on her body thank God. Her chain broke, specifically the sram powerlink. I feel terrible, I just replaced her chain last month (D-A 7800) and used that damn sram link. Never again, and the other is coming off of my bike in the am.

First, and most importantly, how is Jennifer? Is she still in the hospital, or has she come home? Our thoughts are with you. Let us know if you need anything. Also, I'd like to mention something about SRAM chains for everyone's safety. The 8 and 9 speed SRAM chains used a Power Link that could be re-used over and over. But the 10 speed SRAM chains use a Power Lock and it is NOT meant to be taken apart once it is installed. Doing so will weaken or damage it. It is the equivalent of a Shimano hyperglide pin. If you need to break the chain later you have to do it in a different place and then have to join it with another PowerLock. Also, like a hyperglide pin, they don't work on all chains. they are only meant to work on SRAM 10 speed chains. The dimensions of other chains can load them differently, especially during shifting side-loads, and weaken them. For the same reason, you cannot use an 8/9 speed Powerlink on a 10 speed chain. I'm mentioning this, not because I'm trying to be my usual nitpicky self , but because I don't think most people realize the product is different than it used to be. SRAM could probably do more to make people aware that one of the selling points of their old chains is a potential liability in their new ones.

We are at home, she was discharged from the hospital just a few hours in the ED.
Jennifer is going to be OK. She has a pretty severe concussion, and will probably be dizzy for a few days. Amazingly, no bones were broken in the crash. We will never know what caused this accident, nobody else crashed, and the other women riding with her are not certain what happened either. From what I learned there was an attack, Jennifer responded from the middle back of the field (I guess she got out of line to come around riders in front of her to increase position), she was standing to sprint, then got bucked over her bars to the ground. Her teammate said she didn't slide much at all, just landed in a pile (she does not have serious road rash for going 30 mph and crashing).
I do have to make a correction to my previous post. I found the original packaging for the chain and quick link I installed a month ago on Jennifer's bike. It is a Dura-Ace 7800 series chain and Connex Wipperman 10 speed Shimano compatible quick link. It was installed with the round end leading, on the outside, just at the enclosed instructions direct.
I am sorry that I wrongly stated that it was a Sram link. I stand corrected.

That's great news! It isn't great to have a concussion, of course, but I'm happy to hear that isn't worse. Do you have to wake her up every two hours to make sure she's OK? Concussed people love that.

The head and neck CT ruled out any hemorrhagic concerns that are the reason you have to wake and assess a patient's level of consciousness, so the doctor said she could sleep away without any problem. If you or someone you know hits their head, insist on a head CT, and make sure your nurse gives pain medication within 10 minutes of the request, if not, fire the nurse and talk directly to the doctor, make him write a stat order. It is your right as a patient to have your pain addressed immediately and without prejudice.

Glad to hear she is home and going to be OK. That is definitely good news.
I like the term "concussed people" for some reason. Is that if you get a concussion and use a lot of profanity? Just joking. I was a "concussed" person after buying it down Walnut Creek a few years ago doing about 45mph on my then new De Rosa. I think the telling sign I had a concussion was that I did not ask about my bike as we waited on the ambulance. Chris, Gibbs, and Justin were there, so they can share on the story. I have no recollection of the event after the crash for several hours. I first remember coming around during the CT scan and wondering what I had been talking to the nurse about. ;D

Wish Jennifer well. She's probably going to be plenty sore as well the next few days. It could have been a whole lot worse. I would check the bike out good ,and take the fork out for inspection of the steering tube before she starts riding again. We better stop debating stuff breaking...

I dropped the bike off at Motion Makers this afternoon for the experts to look at it. Good call on the fork, it does have a carbon steer tube. The bars she runs are Deda Newton, we chose that over carbon for the crash durability and the short reach model works with her small hands.
The race guys at RMS said they have seen way too many chains breaking lately.
FYI----Meclizine works great for dizziness when you hit your head.
