I'm not sure many of the people on this board noticed, but since I'm a mountain biker at heart, I couldn't resist giving a shout out to the locals who raced at the National Championships for mountain biking, and kicked some butt!
Some of you remember Chris Herndon of Brevard was the 2007 Dual Slalom PRO National Champion. He was 5th this year in Vermont in the DS after being seeded in first place after the qualifying round.
I don't know him, but Geritt Beytagh of Fletcher WON the PRO Downhill race. Wow!
Willow Koerber of Asheville was 5th in the PRO Cross Country
Sam Koerber of Asheville was 31st in the PRO Cross Country
Kylie Krauss of Asheville was 3rd in the U23 Cross Country
Wes Schempf, who started riding around this area but now lives in PA is the 2008 Semi-pro National Champion in Cross Country and Short Track.
Troy Adams (used to race on the road for Krystal) who lives in Murphy but makes it to our group ride in Whittier often was 10th in the Semi-pro Cross Country and 15th in the short track after spending most of last season out with an ACL knee injury. (maybe there is hope for me!)
There are a host of others as well, too many to list.
Also, Stephen Benson of WCU finished 2nd in the overall SERC MTB series. Way cool!
I guess Dirt racing is still strong in NC?
