Hey, I am converting my hardtail to a single speed and I am looking for options on cranksets. I have been looking at the Race Race Evolve X-drive SS crank and the Truvativ Stylo Single Speed GXP Crankset. I have read reviews on them, some good, some bad. Quite a few say how they bend real easily and they're junk. I wouldn't be using my bike for any hard core stuff, occasional offroad but mainly for riding around campus. I could go real hardcore with Race Face Diabolus X-Type Crankset, but its a lot more expensive and a tad overkill. Does anyone have any other suggestions around a $200 price range? And I won't do this til sometime over the summer so I might hit up MM and see whats ya got for me! Thanks, Paul

Find a cool old Mtn Crank and just use spacers to get the chainline straight. If you are just using it as a beater bike or even for regular XC I wouldnt even consider buying something expensive. Go talk to MM, it wouldn't be a big effort to convert your old crank.

I've been avoiding this thread because tech info is a lot easier to discuss in person than in writing. Generally speaking, decide what you want your gearing to be, then sort out the parts. Wider, single speed specific, chain/freewheel/ring will generally work better than narrow stuff taken from a multi-speed bike. As cableferrules said, the arms and BB can be anything, as long as the chainline is correct. The chainline will be determined in part by how you configure the rear wheel, and whether the cog position will be adjustable, so that's something you may want to decide before the crankset.

So I finally finished the SS conversion. I used my same crankset, I just took off the other two rings. I got a Surley Singulator and shortend my old chain. I got some DMR spacer set/16 cog and whala, doneskie!! It really was that easy and not too expensive.
SS rocks!!!
