I go to register thinking I am racing both races when I quickly realize its 80 dollars for 2 races. If this price hangs around much longer my bike racing days will certainly be over (or very very limited). What happened to 25 dollars for a bike race (Greenville's races next weekend are both 25 dollars). 40 dollars for each event is unreal. Well it looks like I will only be racing the criterium this weekend

If you play your cards right, make friends, place in some races (including road races), learn how to be smart in races, and don't get a bad reputation in the pack, you could end up on an elite team or a developmental team that will pay your entry fees (or some of them) for you.

I get 20 dollars per event already (one big check at the end of the year) which helps alot but at 40 dollars per event thats insane. Yes, playing my cards right will definitely help for next year. I know if I am feeling the pressure think of the other 400+ riders who aren't so lucky to have entry fees and/or part of them paid (especially broke college students) + the outrageous gas prices (YUCK ON BOTH).

How about the cost of some rain gear? We're going to need it.

Its funny you said that because I didn't pre-reg. So I emailed Josh last night and told him good luck at the criterium. With a 90% chance of rain / thunderstorms all day I will not be going. 40 dollar entry fee + rain = not appealing to me. This race is my local race its 35-40 minutes from my house. Anyone who knows me knows I hate the rain much less racing in a p/1/2 criterium in it. 30mph + sharp curves + lots of riders + RAIN = more than dangerous. I have never done a race in the rain where there wasn't more than a few wrecks not saying I wont race in the rain but not for 40 dollars...they can all have at it without me this time around. There is 2 good road races next weekend in Greenville which should be good enough for me! HAVE FUN! Hope your race is wreck free.

I think $40 entry fee is way over the top. I race Knobscorcer this weekend and pay $25 through the excellent "Gone Riding " promotor. Wish they were into road racing too. How does cycling ever become a major sport if its unaffordable for a lot of people, especially kids. Overseas you can ride training races for a few $, and race entry fees are way lower, and the sport is much larger (as a result?). I know liability has some to do with this, but even the Tour rides (without insurance , without scoring or payout) are typical in the $35-40 range. With gas at $3.50 I bet attendance will suffer further this year.
