Scuba diving is my forte and not cycling, but I recently inherited an 'Eclipse' bicycle that my father paid $1600 for when it was brand new, nearly five years ago. The bike shows minor signs of wear, but I know for a fact that he always took meticulous care of it. I'd like to sell the bike, as it will only gather dust if I keep it. How can I best determine the value? Is there a rule-of-thumb for depreciation? Thanks!

I would take it to the bike shop and get Andrew or Dave to price it. ;D Heck they would prob. put it on consignment for you. later Will

www.ebay.com if you can find a detailed bike just about like yours and/or look at completed listings on ebay for that type of bike!

Clint's eBay suggestion is where I would start (indeed, it's where most bike shops start as well). I think, however, that you'll need an eBay account in order to view completed auctions. Obviously, completed auctions represent what others have actually agreed to pay for similar bikes.
I'm not sure where you are, geographically, but Like Will H. says, many local bike shops sell consignment bikes and charge somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-25% of what the bike sells for. Many also list them on eBay for you as well.
Finally - and I promise to stop displaying my mastery of the obvious after this - bikes sell like many outdoor recreational items: when the weather is ripe for riding. Don't be too discouraged if no serious interest is taken in the bike until spring.
For what it's worth - Will

Yeah I think I would go with Irish's advice on this one , waiting until Spring might be the best route, (If your after top dollar). Besides it would give you plenty of research time to price your bike.
