Deadline May 11th
NC-DOT is currently working on plans to replace the bridge on Old Cullowhee rd that crosses the Tuck, right in the middle of Cullowhee. The DOT is accepting comments on the designs of the bridge. Construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2012
You may not be aware that the Cullowhee Revitalization Endeavor has been working on plans to improve the interface with the river in Cullowhee and create more of a river park, a place where people can recreate next to and in the river more readily. We hope this will become an attraction of the area and a fantastic resource for our community.
It is critical to the success of the river park that the bridge be designed in such a way as to accommodate the needs of the park.
You can read more about the park and see concept drawings of the project at: www.wcu.edu/28789.asp
If you are in support of the project, then download a comment form, express your opinion and mail to the DOT. You can also find a list of recommended comments at that website. The more people that make comments, the better. It is important that the DOT hear the need from the community.
Just FYI, for cyclists, there are already plans to have bike lanes on each side of the bridge.
I just made some updates to the suggested comments, they might not go live on the site for a day, so here they are:
- Recommend Option 2 (see project information from the DOT above)
- Make sure the bridge to be designed with a future park in mind
- Make the bridge a focal point and an attraction in itself - an integral part of the park
- Make sure the bridge abutments allow for walkways under the bridge on both sides of the river
- Install see through guard rails (concrete arch type) so that the river park can be viewed more easily form the sidewalk and bike lane
- Construct the bridge with pleasing architecture that would fit-in with a river park setting
- Build observation platforms over the river
- Make ADA accessible ramps down to the river on the north and south side
- Make sure the bridge to be designed with a future park in mind
- Make the bridge a focal point and an attraction in itself - an integral part of the park
- Include mountings for future street lamps (street lamps are the responsibility of the town of Cullowhee)
- Decrease the gradient of the slope of the North Bank above the bridge to allow more easy access to the water
- Acquire the houses and land to enable more park space
- Extend bridge sidewalks to the terminous of the proposed greenway
- Extend sidewalks to the WCU campus
- When acquiring land, purchase the following properties: 7559-46-2173, 7559-46-1151, 7559-45-4790 (these are the 3 properties on the north side of the river along Wayahutta rd. closest to the bridge.
