I like my MTB tubeless and want CX tubeless, but have been told that unless you have the Shimano tubeless wheels, Stan's doesn't cut it! Does anyone have experience with this or know if I can run Stan's fine with tubeless on an Easton rim?

I used to run only tubular CX tires, but have been experimenting with the tube-less CX tires this summer with good luck and will run them on half of my CX wheels for this season. Here is what I have learned:
1. The only tires that will work are the Hutchinson CX tires labeled "tubeless ready". They make 2 tread patterns, the piranha for dryer conditions and the bulldog for muddier conditions. Any other tire simply won't stay on the rim without tubes.
2. You have two options with these tires... A. Run them on rims specifically designed to be tubeless. Shimano makes several options - the road tubeless system. Other companies are starting to follow suit like fulcrum.
B. You can run the Hutchinson tires on regular clincher rims with the Stan's no-tubes rim strips (they make CX specific versions). This not only makes the rim air tight (seals the spoke holes) but also improves the interface of the tire and rim to prevent burping.
3. I tried to mount the tires on mavic kyserium wheels without the stans rim strip. Since there are no spoke holes on the inside of the rim, it should be air tight. I could get the tires to seal, but would burp air at an alarming rate while riding. I installed the stans rim strip and have had no problems.
4. I've been using stans sealant inside the tires with good luck. Even got a 2mm puncture and stans sealed it up, allowing me to ride the rest of the way home. I then patched the tires from the inside, and it is as good as new.
5. I can run pretty low pressure, almost as low as I can with the tubular tires. I'm 165lbs and have been happy with 35-37psi
Hope that helps

Apart from the options Josh mentioned people have been using the Stans 355 29'r rim with some -non tubeless ready- cross tires. They seem to work in a few combinations but at a price. The pressure has to be higher to prevent tire squirm (sp?) or burping in the corners, which does away with the advantage. Also , not as fast as a good tubular. You can get Challenge Fango tubulars for $59 at the moment. Only need some cheap tubular wheels for a better combination. Ghetto tubeless can work with MTB tires but is almost impossible with cross tires. Didn't try that with the tubeless cross tires though.
