So my chain has had it's last ride. I found out earlier this week it is stretched beyond logic. I tried to ride today, but the chain was skipping way too much, so I kept it in a light gear and limped back to campus.
Now that I have this old chain that I won't be using any more, what should I do with it? There has got to be some way to re-use the old chain instead of just throwing it in the trash.
Ideas?

Vespa's answer is correct.
When the chain because stretched beyond limits its time for a new one and possibly a new cassette if you failed to change your chain / improper maintenance can cause more wear and tear on your smaller cogs especially your smallest cog (i.e. the biggest technically 11/12 tooth)...so consider a new cassette also & next time change the chain quicker. At times I advise taking the cassette off and cleaning the 11/12 tooth regularly as these places become filled with dirt your chain may not set on them right and wear out your cassette much quicker. I have referenced this from park tool from some video I watched a few months ago but have no idea what video it was.
I sent you a PM also as I have a few items to help you out.
Take Care,
Clint

Hmmm, I sent you a message that said I have a dura-ace chain that you can have that is in okay condition? Do you want it or not? I saw no reply but an open message Resourceful with a warn out chain: You could possibly take it to a scrap metal place I would assume and maybe get a few nickels for it. You could possibly turn your road bike into a fixed gear and have less chance of it changing gears on you ;D Donate it to the WCU Bike Club Yellow Bike Project (Now I like that one!!!)

I prefer sticking with sram chain/cassette for my drive train. And as far as your other offer, I would rather put money on a new cassette and chain rather than buying them used and having to replace them only after a short while.

have you heard of RECYCLING, it even has the word cycle in it, coincidence!
or you could make a picture frame out of it. it's easy to do, just rap the dang thing in a rectangle that measures 4x6, or what ever your fancy is.

Oh you have a SRAM chain...YUCK... I've been using a SRAM chain and cassette all winter and have had no problems. Had a SRAM chain on my mountain bike for years, no issues. for your old chain, make jewelry , bracelets, ear rings, necklaces.

I guess you could make some of those crafty doodads folk suggest -- for me, that's too much effort. I just reacted to the thought of you keeping it around "just in case" it comes in handy one day -- that's a recipe for owning a lot of dirty, useless junk. I guess one person's junk is another's treasure. But outside of "art" there's nothing actually useful you can do with it. I'd throw it away -- if you want to be conscientious, the dump has a household and construction metal recycling area. I'm with you on not taking someone else's dirty useless junk (although that's very generous of you, Clint!). I'm lookin to actually do something with it so I don't have to just throw it away. I'm trying to be resourceful.

We recycle all the old chains and cassettes. You are welcome to come throw it in the metal box. I also have a picture frame that my sister made me from old chains that gets lots of comments at the shop. Come check it out!
