Companies that are hiring? I know companies that are shutting down but not hiring...My step mother is a nurse and there on a hiring freeze...My fathers plant is shutting down fully in March after he has worked there 26 years lucky for him he owns rental properties which actually works out well in an economy like so...so I have some ideas for you Ideas: Try temping, it may be a hard job but it will get you out there and you can get some exposure with at least some income. You may have to steer away from your degree just to land a dollar in this economy. It also sounds like you bought a house without ever having an emergency fund. Was your emergency fund your bike? As a financial planning major I would suggest a few things. I hope you will like what I have to say: If you need a source of income have you considered renting out your own home? Think of all the people losing there homes right now who can't get a loan..Where do they go? Rental Homes! Lets say you rent out your own home and make 700 a month (just assuming you make 200 dollar capital gains here) but then pay rent else where at 500 a month...well your making income of 200 dollars..(we wont get into the tax part of it because rental properties have so many write offs that its part of learning the rental system...pick up a book on renting will HELP) which is better than nothing and there paying off part of your own home for you. So even if you get a job with less pay you can hopefully swing it for now with rental income. When the economy swings back around which IMO may be at least a year if not two then you can hopefully get a better job...save up an emergency fund!!!!!!!!!...and move back in your home! Don't be scared to step down to quickly before you catch yourself off guard not being able to make payments. I myself invest in the market (i.e. stocks) with that in mind I can re-assure you I have seen no significant change in the market (its either trading with a negative regression or its trading sideways) so what is going on now will not change anytime soon. The market will swing up way before the economy will. PLAY IT SAFE & G-LUCK!

Hey -- sorry to hear about your job loss. As an alum, you're welcome to take advantage of any assistance we can provide here in career services. First, call me -- as a career counselor, I'd be glad to look over your resume and discuss your job search. Second, consider attending some of our career events. We actually still have employers planning to recruit here at Western. Like Joey says, people are still hiring talented young college graduates. Also, log back into JobCat and use it to supplement your searching. All those features, including an event calendar, are here: careers.wcu.edu. Last, launch a multi-pronged search strategy. Take advantage of any/all resources you may find. Network (like you're doing now). Don't count on any one plan to find a job. If you come back for a job fair, it could be a great excuse to get in a few bike rides with old friends! Best of luck, Mike Does anyone know of companies that are hiring? Sorry to hear that. I know the Census Bureau is hiring for the 2010 census. May be a stop-gap for the next opportunity. Assuming you do not want to join the military, even though you would qualify as an officer candidate since you have your 4-year degree. The DoD (Dept of Defense) is looking for a "few good men" (actually looking for a lot of both men and women, enlisted and officer).

Go to your local public school administrative office and find out how to sign up to be a substitute teacher. After you get called a few times, show up, and do a good job, your phone will ring off the hook for you to come in. The pay is not great, but it's work, and you can always say no to coming in if you have an interview to go to for the big job. Who knows, you may like it so much you become a teacher full time. There is about to be a flood of money headed for education, we are finally going to invest in education. Read about it here: www.nytimes.com/2009/01/28/education/28educ.html?_r=1&hp

Go to your local public school administrative office and find out how to sign up to be a substitute teacher. After you get called a few times, show up, and do a good job, your phone will ring off the hook for you to come in. The pay is not great, ... the rest truncated ... I'll chime in on this one. Be wary... if you so choose to go for the sub teacher route. The initial thought that many have is that "any knucklehead can do this"... but that's not exactly true. Or rather, not true at all. While TC is correct in the example that "if you do a good job and get known... the phone will ring daily", there are things to keep in mind. The pay in Jackson Cty is the whopping $68/day (if memory serves), that is unless you're a certified teacher, which makes somewhere around $75/day (again, if memory serves) (not the best ROI, I would think, and WCURacer Clint would I'm sure agree). And (this is from my personal experience... so is subject to opinion), if you do a good job, which means you actually teach and perform assessments and test and ask for homework and ask kids to actually learn (as compared to being simply a baby-sitter), they (the kids) will get you removed. This sounds summary and harsh, but it's what happened to me. Sub teachers are a commodity, and treated as such. The students are quite aware of this... and have no problem going to see Mr Principal, and telling stories. In my case, I was "swearing all the time, throughout the entire class". When confronted by the principal, I requested to have my class monitored so that I could demonstrate that this was not true... but to no avail. I was quite simply, and abruptly, told that they "have little latitude with substitutes" and that "my services were no longer needed". Moral of the story... kids will be kids. I've since learned that this has happened to many others, and the administration is in a position where it's simpler to tell you (a substitute) to walk instead of investigate... so you get told to walk. The kids know this, and use it to their advantage, and as such, some not-so-wonderful positive reinforcement of the actions has been "nicely" provided to them. Jaded? Yeah, I suppose so.... so take this post for what it's worth.

The republicans got the money for schools cut out of the deal anyway, all for 3 votes. Truly one of the most unpatriotic acts I have seen, children last mentality.
I never realized it was so bad for substitutes in the school system. It's interesting that you talk about pay. If they paid more, there would be better teachers. Oh wait, there is no money, we already went through this above. Things have changed so much since I was a school boy.
PS- I had to come back and add this one thought.... The new chairman of the Repblican party claimed that government jobs are not really jobs. Substitute teachers get paid via the government, so if you "worked" as one you would still not have a job (using Mr Steele's convoluted statement of fact). You just can win with this crowd.
