So this whole problem started on a quest for the correct grease for my hub overhaul. I just needed a little bit of grease to keep everything from seizing up. Well for starters I went to the bike shop. They were out of the small tube of park tool POLY LUBE 1000 which retails for ~ $5 dollars. They had a big 16OZ blue can with a can like opening on the shelf for somewhere ~ $12 dollars. Wow 12 dollars of grease I don’t think I need that much. So I decided to just see if Lowes had anything similar at the least; If not I would just wait until the bike shop had the small tube in stock.
A few minutes later I am at Lowes. I am thinking I probably will not find the right thing for my bike since this stuff is so specific (or is it?). I arrive at Lowes and upon the entrance I ask someone where the lubricants are and they quickly walk me to them. My eyes first glanced at this very similar 16OZ blue can with a can like opening. I took a really good look at the design to realize this looks just like the POLYLUBE 1000 at the bike shop but this stuff is only $3.50. I quickly ask myself can it really be the same? Well at first I was like it does say wheel bearing grease so I guess I will give it a shot and if I mess up my ceramic bearings life will go on.
As soon as I get home the thought is still with me (is it the same?). I quickly go to the internet to type what I was looking for into Google (Lubrimatic 11380 Ingredients). The first link I arrive at is a PDF file that shows the ingredients. I then quickly type in another Google search (PolyLube 1000 Ingredients). I start glancing back and forth. The words are identical. Yes the $3.50 can was the same as the specially formulated for road bikes $12 version. It’s amazing how much markup park tool has on there products that are so specially formulated. I assume this is probably the same way for the special Mavic Lube that they sell.
Park Tool is definitely a TOOL for ripping people off like that & quite sneaky! So how many off you bought Polylube...?
