After a wirlwind day of fixing bikes (Thanks MM for the tool), packing bikes into a giant 2-bike plastic case, and going to work on Tuesday, Deb and I made it to Asheville on Tuesday night to spend the evening with a friend before our 6:30am flight to Kansas City. Packing and travel went off without a hitch, landing us in KC at 11am today, plenty of time to get a car, check in the hotel, re-build the bikes and get in a couple laps on the course before dark.
Oops, the rental car was too tiny for the bikes, back to the counter for a bigger one. Oh, and double oops, the weather here is a little less than desireable. On Tuesday in Sylva I rode in shorts and short sleeves. Here, Kansas is just coming out of a 3-4 day "ice storm". Everything here is covered in a 1/4inch of ice and frozen snow/sleet. It got above freezing today (34degrees) here and will be in the teens overnight.
We bundled up and headed out for a ride on the course. Only a couple other brave souls were out on the ice. I think this was the strangest ride conditions I have ever encountered. The ice lens on top of the grass would break when you rode on it, making the course look like someone had covered it with ice cubes. Traction wasn't too bad, but definitly wasn't confidence inspiring. Under the ice, the grass was muddy. The wet would get thrown up on the bikes and us, and then immediately freeze. Frozen mud all over us and our bikes. Hmm... should be interesting.
After a trip to the car wash for the bikes, dinner, a trip to the grocery store and registration to pick up numbers, the Whitmores are all set for 4 days of racing.
Deb is first up 9am Thursday Morning with her B women race, then Friday for her age group race. Deb has a real chance of a top 5 in both categories. My races are Sat-Sun for my Masters race then the pro race on Sunday.
Snow is called for on Sat, which will make things more interesting.
