Hi All,
Just thought it might be cool to share a rough draft of a news release about Tom Baker's recent adventure race. Words fail to capture the pure hell that the teams endured during that race. One really had to be there... Indeed, even we "athletic supporters" were literally in survival mode. Suffice to say that while I had respect for Tom’s levels of endurance and guts before, he is now officially my hero. Here’s to you Tom!!!
Here’s the draft release:
How does this sound for a weekend outing: 30 hours of nonstop cyclonic winds, freezing white-capped waters, below freezing ambient temperatures, gale-force winds, frozen mountain bike gears, all over a 100 mile land and water orienteering course?
For Cullowhee-based Team Mile One Adventure Racing it sounds like fun! WCU staffer Tom Baker and WCU alumnus Pete Gallo were one of only 24 teams to successfully complete all events and finish the 2008 Checkpoint Zero Adventure Race this weekend in Hiawassee, GA. Part of the 2008 Checkpoint Tracker Adventure Racing Series, the Hiawassee race was especially challenging due to severe weather conditions. Indeed, over 36% of the 74 teams dropped out of the race.
The Mile One crew was supported by current WCU Construction Management student and fulltime IT Technology Support Analyst Al Laster and Assistant Professor of Communication Dr. Will Dulaney. Tom happens to be married to Dr. Marsha Lee Baker, WCU Associate Professor of English, and Pete is married to WCU alumna and former English instructor Elisabeth Aiken.
