I turn 40 in just over a month. I will hold out until then. I also think the categories should be by weight, not age. IMO, that has much ore bearing on your performance than age does if you had to choose one of the two.

OK.. I have a dumb question. Which gate/fence do we go to? I did this damned climb for real this time and like an idiot, it was after 40 miles and climbing both Cowee (not Cullowhee) and Ellijay. The distance I got to the actual parking lot was 1.18 miles at 8:35. The time to the first gate, which I think is the actual challenge, was roughly 7:47. I had to eyeball it because I kept going all the way up and I was going crosseyed. Hey Fred -- it's the first gate, the chain link one that they lock at night, right after the big view and the little false flat, and that agonizing last little pitch. Good effort -- it'll be fun to come back and knock down your own time when you're fresh. I'll update the results!

I always thought the masters category was 35+. I wonder if anyone is actually turning 40 this year.... ;D Fortunately, I turned 40 last year. Sure beats the alternative! The first Masters category in USCF racing is 30-34, followed by 35-39. followed by 40-44, etc. At smaller races, they'll sometimes combine some of these categories or start one at 40. I turned 30 in 98', which allowed me to race master's nats with my team that year -- I was still only 29 because the races were in July, but my official racing age was "30 in 98."

IMO, that has much ore bearing on your performance than age does if you had to choose one of the two. You're right that for short efforts age doesn't play as much of a role, except perhaps in explosive stuff like match sprints. This plays out most obviously in time trials -- mature riders will often clock better times due to lots of factors, mental and even physical. Repetitive jumps can get the best of older dudes, as will stage races. Mainly, it's the extreme high end output and the ability to recover that begin to slip with age. Smart training and racing, elusive "seasoned legs," and the mental experience needed to sustain higher-than-AT efforts can give masters racers an actual edge in lots of events. I always found masters races to be harder than category 3, although when I was fit they were easier (not to get results but to finish) because of the steady higher speeds were gentler on the body than all the frenetic jumps in the lower categories. About the Airport Challenge categories -- sorry -- weight can be too variable like fitness. Track your own weight and compare times to figure your best climbing weight!

Please post 2010 times for the Airport Challenge!
Note, as the "Ruling Organization" for the Airport Challenge, I don't care if you take EPO, HGH, Advil, or PBR to achieve your results. But if somebody accuses you of doing so, and you deny it, and you sue them with other people's money, and then you finally admit it but accuse all the top time holders of having done the same thing, all of your results and Airport Challenge posts will be deleted as if you never existed.

OK -- today marks my 4th day in a row on the road bike, and my 5th in 2010 (really since July of 09). Including the mountain bike, today was maybe my 8th or 9th ride of any sort during the last 10 months, and I hadn't done much riding since maybe 2005. But I did it -- I gave the Airport Challenge a shot and set myself a benchmark time. Maybe I can beat it in a few months. I challenge all wnccycling members to do the same. Here it is! Drumrrrrooooooollllllllllllllllll: [glow=red,2,300] 11:02:51

For what it's worth, I'm 41, soon to be 42. So I guess I should be included in the Master's list for challenge times? Not sure I like want to accept that distinction though - I'd rather be 18 and go for the young riders jersey! Kevin Dobo
