That one is a tough last 25 miles, with the last 3 being murder. I did it in 2007 and 2008. I think you said you have done the climb before, so no surprises for you. I had never done it until the Bald Buster. Have fun!

No worries there... although I've never done the event before, I've done Brasstown and Hogpen a number of times.
Speaking of.. a few of my Ohio buddies and I will be riding that area Monday the 26th thru Wednesday the 28th. We generally do one loop per day: Monday: Wolfpen/Woody/Neals Tuesday: Unicoi/Brasstown(Jacks)/Hogpen Wednesday: Tuesday in reverse; Brasstown optional (meaning yes, we're doing it again)

How closed is "closed"? I rode around that barrier and up to the top on February 20th (that really warm weekend we had) despite there being ice and snow on the top quarter mile or so. Is it actually impassible to bikes?

Well for what it's worth, we climbed Hogpen Gap via the "back" (steeper) side on Tuesday and then the front on Wednesday. We descended the front both days. We saw quite a few other cyclists both days including the entire Jittery Joe's (except that's not the sponsor anymore) team. The road is officially closed to vehicles on the back but they are allowed up as far as the last overlook on the front side. My friends actually took a chance and drove over it on their way home late Wednesday to save some time. Guess they got lucky and weren't seen or ticketed.

Did this ride with Scott in 2008. Rode well (maybe top 5) but walked up the steep section in the final couple of miles. Very humbling experience.
