Just back from Bend and CX Nats. I ended up riding a really good race in the 30-34 masters. It was only good enough for 19th place, but out of the 130 starters, I figure that wasn't too bad. The Pro-Elite race was totally crazy with 160 guys all trying to fight their way forward. It was a constant stream of riders the whole race. The crowds were huge and LOUD! Very cool to be a part of the scene. The officials were being very conservative in pulling lapped riders. They were keeping about a half a lap clear in front of the leaders. I got pulled, and it was several minutes till the leaders came through. I would have liked to have raced for longer, but there were several problems earlier in the week and in the women's elite race with lapped riders so they were just trying to keep us out of the way. They placed me right about in the middle 80-something? Deb fought a tough Elite race for 60-something place and had the pleasure of almost crashing Katie Compton as she got lapped.
The NC crew was a force at Nats. A bunch of the NC die-hards were there to represent and support. Thanks to everyone who was there cheering! Its nice to hear your name among the sea of bells, horns, drums, and just plain yelling. Also thanks to the driving crew who is hauling about 25 bikes in a trailer across the country to save us all some $$$ and hassle of flying with bikes.
22 CX races for me this year. About 75 races total for the year. All of them good fun and I already can't wait till next year. I came into CX season lacking some fitness after having mono July-Sep, so felt good with steady improvement throughout Oct-Nov. I think next year I'll be able to step it up a notch with more proper training prep for the season.
For now, I get a little break from training for about a week before starting over again with base miles to get ready for spring road races. I'm looking forward to some long miles on the bike this winter and not doing all these short painful intervals.
See you on the road, or perhaps on the trail.
